A sombre mood has enveloped Lawanti village in Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State following a devastating road accident that claimed the lives of seven villagers. The victims were travelling to attend a wedding ceremony in neighbouring Borno State when the tragic incident occurred in Potiskum.
Community Mourns Promising Young Lives
The fatal accident happened on Friday, December 27, 2025. All seven deceased were natives of Lawanti village, comprising three males and four females. Among the victims were two daughters of Malam Idris Lawanti, who shared his profound grief with journalists. "It pains me so much, I have lost two of my precious daughters. One was about to finish nursing school, the other was in SS2," the bereaved father lamented.
Another community member, Idris Abubakar, described the event as "tragic and devastating". He confirmed that the accident has plunged the entire village into mourning. "The community is in shock over this tragic incident. This is a very sad moment for us because we have lost promising young ones all in one day," Abubakar stated.
Governor Inuwa Yahaya Extends Condolences
The Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya, has expressed deep sadness over the tragic motor accident. In a press statement issued by the Director General of Press Affairs at the Government House, Ismaila Uba Misilli, the governor described the incident as a painful and devastating loss.
Governor Yahaya noted that the untimely death of such precious souls has deeply touched the hearts of all, adding that no words can adequately console families who have lost loved ones under such tragic circumstances. The governor's commiseration was specifically extended to several bereaved families:
- The District Head, Bello Hassan Babangida, who lost his sister and niece.
- Idris Lawanti Maigari, who lost his daughters.
- Idris A. Isah Lawanti, the Councillor representing Akko Ward, who also lost close relatives.
Prayers for the Departed and Bereaved
In his message, Governor Inuwa Yahaya prayed that Almighty Allah grant the bereaved families, relatives, and the entire Lawanti community the strength, patience, and fortitude to bear the immense loss. The governor also offered prayers for the souls of the departed.
"Governor Inuwa Yahaya also prayed that Allah forgives the shortcomings of the deceased, accepts their good deeds, and grants them Aljannatul Firdaus," the official statement concluded. The tragic accident serves as a stark reminder of the perennial road safety challenges on Nigerian highways, particularly during the festive season when travel increases.
