Adamawa Commissioner Issues Stern Warning to Motorists Over Reckless Driving
The Adamawa State Commissioner for Works, Mohammed Suleiman, has issued a strong caution to motorists across the state, urging them to immediately cease reckless driving practices and strictly adhere to all traffic regulations. This warning comes amid growing concerns over safety, particularly along the flyovers in Yola, the state capital.
Rising Violations and Infrastructure Damage
Speaking to journalists in his office, Commissioner Suleiman expressed deep concern about the increasing frequency of traffic rule violations and the vandalization of newly installed road infrastructure. He highlighted that critical safety features such as barriers, signages, and wire mesh have been targeted, compromising public safety and the integrity of the road network.
According to Suleiman, while the flyovers are designed and engineered to withstand heavy vehicular loads, some vehicles—especially those carrying excessive weight—often develop mechanical faults while ascending. Such situations can lead to dangerous rollbacks, posing serious and immediate risks to other road users, including pedestrians and other motorists.
Hazards from Heavy-Duty Vehicle Breakdowns
The commissioner further revealed that heavy-duty vehicles occasionally break down at the peak of the flyovers. These incidents not only create hazardous conditions by obstructing traffic flow but also potentially compromise the structural safety of the bridges themselves. This underscores the urgent need for compliance with weight limits and proper vehicle maintenance.
Call for Collective Responsibility and Vigilance
Suleiman emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in protecting public infrastructure. He urged residents and communities to remain vigilant and promptly report any incidents of vandalism or misuse of road facilities. He also issued a clear warning that anyone found damaging or misusing public property will face prosecution in accordance with the law, as part of efforts to deter such destructive behaviors.
This appeal aims to foster a safer driving environment and preserve the state's investments in road development, ensuring long-term benefits for all citizens.
