Three Dead, Five Rescued as Bus Plunges into River in Oyo State Accident
In a tragic incident in Oyo State, three individuals lost their lives while five others were rescued alive after a passenger bus plunged into the Ariyo River along Amuloko Road in Ibadan. The Oyo State Fire Services Agency confirmed the accident, which occurred on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, with emergency responders swiftly mobilizing to the scene.
Emergency Response and Rescue Operation
The Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Mr. Maroof Akinwande, issued a statement on Thursday, March 12, 2026, detailing the events. According to Akinwande, the agency received a distress call about the accident through a telephone call from Mrs. Fadeke Yusuf. Personnel were immediately deployed to the location to initiate rescue efforts.
Upon arrival, responders encountered a Suzuki bus with registration number LEW 484 XA from Osun State, which had been carrying eight passengers. The vehicle had lost control and crashed into the river, leading to a chaotic scene. Akinwande reported that five persons were rescued alive and transported to Ona-Ara Private Hospital in the Jegede area for medical treatment.
Recovery of Bodies and Investigation
Tragically, three bodies were recovered from the river during the operation. These victims were handed over to a team of policemen from the Ogbere Divisional Headquarters, led by ASP Aishat Ibrahim, for further investigation and identification. The swift action of the emergency services helped mitigate the potential for more casualties, but the loss of life has raised concerns about road safety in the area.

In his statement, Akinwande attributed the cause of the accident to reckless driving.
