Four Killed in Tragic Collision on Ijebu-Ode-Ore Expressway, FRSC Confirms
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Command, has officially confirmed that four individuals lost their lives in a devastating auto crash that occurred on Monday along the Ijebu-Imushin axis of the Ijebu Ode-Ore Expressway. The incident, which involved two vehicles, resulted in fatal injuries for all occupants, with the victims pronounced dead at the scene.
Details of the Accident and Vehicles Involved
According to a statement released by the Command's Spokesperson, Odunsi Afolabi, the crash involved a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BDJ 482 XC and a blue MAN Diesel truck bearing registration number RSH 969 XC. The collision took place at approximately 11:16 p.m., when the Toyota Hiace bus collided with the MAN Diesel truck, which was reported to belong to Julius Berger.
Regrettably, all four individuals involved in the crash, comprising two male adults and two females, sustained fatal injuries and were confirmed dead at the scene. The remains of the victims were subsequently evacuated and deposited at the State Hospital Mortuary in Ijebu Ode for further procedures.
Preliminary Investigation and Cause of the Crash
Preliminary investigations conducted by the FRSC indicate that the crash was primarily caused by Speed Violation (SPV). Further details revealed that the MAN Diesel truck was being towed at the time of the incident. However, the towing chain snapped, leading to the truck becoming stationary on the expressway. The speeding Toyota Hiace bus then rammed into the truck, resulting in the fatal collision.
In a concerning development, it was reported that following the collision, the driver of the towing vehicle fled the scene, abandoning the truck. This action has prompted additional scrutiny as the investigation continues.
Police Custody and Ongoing Investigations
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF), Imushin Division, has taken custody of both vehicles involved in the crash and is handling the case for further investigation. This step is part of standard procedures to determine any additional factors or liabilities related to the incident.
FRSC Urges Caution and Safety Measures
In response to this tragedy, the state Sector Commander, Akinwunmi Fasakin, has issued a stern warning to all motorists. He urged strict adherence to speed limits, particularly during night travel when visibility and reaction times may be compromised. Fasakin emphasized the importance of responsible driving to prevent such avoidable accidents.
Additionally, Fasakin called upon towing vehicle owners to ensure that their towing equipment meets all necessary safety standards. This precaution is crucial to prevent equipment failures, like the snapped chain in this case, which can lead to catastrophic outcomes on busy highways.
