Godstime Ike, a commercial tricycle operator along the route, described the scene: "It was at that moment that the tanker rammed into the tricycle, crushing those inside." He noted that the child who had already crossed the road survived the crash, but the others, along with the rider, were fatally injured.
Residents reported that the tanker driver fled the scene immediately after the accident, though his assistant was later apprehended by military personnel and handed over to the police. The community has been plunged into grief, with many describing the loss of the young pupils as devastating.
