Bus Crash Claims Life in Lagos, Multiple Injuries Reported
A severe road traffic accident occurred on Saturday, November 16, 2025, in the Majidun area, near Ogolonto, Lagos, resulting in one fatality and leaving six other individuals with serious injuries. The collision involved a commercial bus and a stationary tipper truck.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the incident took place around 4:23 pm WAT. Preliminary investigations by the agency revealed that the Volkswagen commercial bus, with registration number EPE 494 XM, was traveling at an excessive speed when it experienced a sudden and catastrophic brake failure.
Sequence of Events and Immediate Aftermath
According to LASTMA, the driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle due to the combination of high speed and the mechanical failure. The bus subsequently crashed into a tipper truck that had been parked at the roadside. The truck driver had stopped to purchase diesel.
The impact of the collision was devastating. An adult female passenger lost her life instantly at the scene. Five female passengers and one male passenger sustained serious injuries and were promptly rushed to Benic Special Hospital to receive medical attention. The body of the deceased was taken to the General Hospital in Ikorodu for official documentation.
In the chaotic aftermath, the driver of the tipper truck attempted to flee the scene. However, LASTMA operatives pursued and successfully apprehended him. The bus driver was also arrested at the scene. Both individuals were handed over to the Ipakodo Police Division for a comprehensive investigation into the causes of the tragic event.
Official Condolences and Safety Warnings
Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, expressed his profound condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victims a swift and complete recovery. He seized the opportunity to issue a stern warning to all motorists regarding the dangers of overspeeding.
Bakare-Oki emphasized, "Excessive speed drastically impairs a driver’s capacity to respond to sudden mechanical failures or unforeseen hazards, thereby magnifying the risk of catastrophic outcomes." His statement underscores a critical message about road safety and the importance of responsible driving.
Separate Tragic Incident Involving Faulty Truck Brakes
In a related and equally tragic event reported by The Guardian, a truck assistant lost his life on Wednesday night at the Ogolonto Traffic Light Intersection, close to the Ikorodu Roundabout. Preliminary reports indicate that the truck involved had faulty brakes.
The assistant had disembarked from the vehicle to place a wooden plank beneath the tyres in an attempt to stabilise it. Tragically, he lost his footing and slipped under the rear wheels of the moving truck, resulting in his instant death.
A LASTMA Special Night Gang Patrol Team, which was on a routine duty along the Ikorodu corridor, witnessed the incident and intervened immediately. The truck driver was taken into custody and also handed over to the Ipakodo Police Division. The body of the deceased was moved to the General Hospital, Ikorodu, while the truck was removed from the expressway to restore normal traffic flow.
Commenting on this second incident, LASTMA's General Manager, Bakare-Oki, described it as "highly preventable." He strongly urged all truck operators to conduct thorough mechanical inspections, with particular attention to braking systems, before embarking on any journey. He warned that poor vehicle maintenance jeopardises not only the driver's safety but also the lives of all other road users.
Bakare-Oki reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Lagos State Government to promoting road safety through rigorous enforcement of traffic laws, continuous public awareness campaigns, and active cooperation with relevant security agencies.
