Tragic Lagos Accident Claims Woman's Life, Injures Six Others
A devastating road accident at New Castle Bus Stop along the Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway in Lagos has resulted in the death of a female passenger and left six others with severe injuries. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the tragic incident occurred over the weekend.
Details of the Fatal Collision
According to Adebayo Taofiq, spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the accident involved a Volkswagen commercial bus with registration number LSD 654 XY. The vehicle reportedly veered off course and violently collided with a roadside culvert along the expressway corridor.
The impact of the crash was so forceful that it ejected a female passenger from the bus onto the expressway roadway. Six other occupants of the commercial bus, including the driver, sustained serious injuries with multiple fractures reported among the victims.
Tragic Turn of Events
In a heartbreaking sequence of events, an oncoming articulated trailer approaching the accident scene was unable to avoid the sudden occurrence. The large vehicle consequently ran over the passenger who had fallen onto the roadway, resulting in her immediate death at the scene.
"Reports revealed that a Volkswagen commercial bus veered off course and violently rammed into a roadside culvert along the corridor," stated Taofiq in an official statement released on Sunday, March 8.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
Personnel from the Lagos State Ambulance Service promptly responded to the scene and evacuated the injured victims to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. The six survivors are receiving care for their various injuries, which include multiple fractures sustained during the violent collision.
Officials from the Lagos State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit were dispatched to remove the remains of the deceased woman from the accident scene. The incident has raised concerns about road safety along the busy Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway corridor, particularly at the New Castle Bus Stop area in Gbagada.
This tragic accident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of road safety measures and the potential consequences of vehicle collisions on Lagos expressways. Authorities continue to investigate the exact circumstances that led to the commercial bus veering off course and the subsequent fatal encounter with the articulated trailer.
