A senior citizen, who works as a trader at the Arena Shopping Complex in Oshodi, Lagos, narrowly escaped death yesterday after being knocked down by a motorcyclist operating illegally on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane. The incident occurred in the early hours, leaving the victim lying unconscious on the busy roadway. Quick-thinking sympathisers intervened just in time, pulling him to safety as oncoming BRT buses approached, preventing a potential tragedy.

After the collision, bystanders immediately sprang into action to assist the injured trader. They helped gather his scattered wares while making concerted efforts to resuscitate him. Following persistent attempts, the man began to show signs of gradual recovery, though he remained disoriented and unable to recall his name or home address. The motorcyclist involved in the accident waited at the scene to attend to the victim, but this gesture did not shield him from criticism over his unauthorized use of the dedicated BRT lane.
Public Outcry Over Lane Misuse
The incident has ignited strong reactions from commuters and onlookers, who expressed frustration at the recurring misuse of BRT lanes by motorcyclists. Gloria Ude, a witness to the event, highlighted the dangers posed by riders who operate at high speeds on lanes not designed for them. She emphasized that many pedestrians cross these lanes without anticipating motorcycles, leading to avoidable accidents. "I think it is good for the government to regulate the movement of motorcycle riders on BRT lanes," Ude stated. "They need to know that the lanes are not meant for them, and their presence there is an encroachment. The government should enforce strict policies to ban reckless riding on these lanes."
Calls for Comprehensive Enforcement
Ude and other sympathisers stressed that prevention is better than cure, advocating for a blanket policy to curb such incidents. They pointed out that enforcement should be applied uniformly, without exceptions for security personnel who might exploit their uniforms to violate traffic laws with impunity. "The policy should be across the board and should not absolve soldiers and police who take advantage of their positions to break the law, including riding dangerously on BRT lanes meant only for prescribed buses," another sympathiser added, echoing the sentiment that such measures are crucial for saving lives and maintaining order on Lagos roads.
