A devastating road accident in Ibadan, Oyo State, resulted in one fatality on Tuesday, March 3, after a Lexus SUV somersaulted and caught fire at Arapaja Bridge in the Kudeti area. The Oyo State Fire Services Agency confirmed the incident, which was reported at precisely 3:44 p.m. via a telephone call from Mr. Lateef Jayeoba, who alerted authorities to a vehicle engulfed in flames at the location.
Swift Response by Firefighters Prevents Further Disaster
According to a statement from the agency's headquarters, firemen led by an Assistant Chief Fire Superintendent were immediately deployed to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered that a Lexus Jeep with registration number KSF 297 JF had reportedly lost control while in motion, somersaulted into a nearby gutter, and ignited into a fierce blaze. The fire service officers acted swiftly, containing the fire and preventing it from spreading to adjacent properties, thereby averting potential additional damage and casualties.
Victims Recovered and Preliminary Findings
The agency reported that two male victims were recovered from the scene. One individual survived and was handed over to policemen from the Mapo Divisional Headquarters before being transported to the nearest hospital for medical attention. Preliminary investigations have attributed the accident to reckless driving, highlighting ongoing concerns about road safety practices in the region.

In response to the incident, the Special Adviser on Fire Reform to the Oyo State Governor and Chairman of the Fire Services Agency, Hon. Dr. Moroof Akinwande, issued a stern warning to motorists. He urged strict adherence to road safety regulations to prevent avoidable accidents and emphasized the critical importance of installing functional fire extinguishers in both vehicles and homes. This measure, he stressed, can help curb fire outbreaks at their early stages, potentially saving lives and property.
The agency also commended operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, Mapo Divisional Headquarters, for providing adequate security during the rescue operation, ensuring a coordinated and effective response to the emergency.
