In a significant move to bolster security, Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has officially commissioned two high-tech surveillance drones. The unveiling ceremony took place on January 19, 2026, at the Chari Meigumeri Barracks parade ground in Lokoja.
A Firm Stance Against Criminality
Governor Ododo used the occasion to issue a stern warning to criminal elements operating within the state. He emphatically declared that his administration would not negotiate with or surrender any community to bandits, kidnappers, or terrorists. "Kogi State will not negotiate with criminals. We will not surrender our communities," the governor stated, affirming that the government must remain in charge.
He positioned the procurement of the drones as a clear demonstration of this resolve. "If any criminal group had any doubt about our determination, the unveiling of these drones should dispel it. To the criminals, I say this plainly: your time is running out," Ododo warned.
Capabilities of the New Security Assets
The newly unveiled HP-20 State Asset Drones are equipped with advanced capabilities designed to give security forces a critical edge. Governor Ododo detailed their functions, which include:
- Operating in difficult terrain and penetrating forested hideouts used by criminals.
- Supporting real-time intelligence gathering for faster, more precise operations.
- Providing early detection of suspicious movements across the state.
- Improving coordination between different security agencies for unified action.
A live demonstration at the event showcased the drones' ability to reach high altitudes, deliver payloads to precise targets, and even supply troops on the battlefield.
Building on a Foundation of Security Achievements
The governor framed the drone launch as the latest step in a comprehensive, two-year security strategy. He highlighted several key achievements that have already made Kogi "the most peaceful state in the North Central zone." These measures include:
Establishing security structures across all 239 political wards in the state to strengthen grassroots intelligence. Formally integrating 2,752 Vigilante Service personnel into the civil service to enhance their welfare and professionalism. Recruiting and equipping hunters across the 21 local government areas to support operations in remote and forested regions.
Other efforts involved sustained clearance operations in flashpoints, the creation of a Quick Response Unit, and the procurement of numerous patrol vehicles, motorcycles, and protective gear for security personnel.
"Today's unveiling of these drones builds on these efforts. It strengthens our ability to see threats early, respond faster, deny criminals' territory, and protect our people better," Governor Ododo concluded.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, who was present, commended the state government's initiative. He noted that the drones demonstrate Kogi's commitment to complementing federal security efforts and boosting the operational capability of the Nigerian Army.
Governor Ododo also extended gratitude to top federal security officials, including the National Security Adviser and service chiefs, for their collaboration. He ended with a call to residents, emphasizing that security is a shared responsibility and urging continued public support for intelligence gathering and early-warning systems.
