The African Union has issued an urgent plea for global intervention as terrorist groups intensify their violent campaign in Mali, creating what officials describe as a deepening humanitarian catastrophe.
AU Chairperson Expresses Grave Concern
AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf voiced profound alarm over the rapidly deteriorating security and humanitarian situation in Mali during a strongly worded statement released on Saturday, November 8, 2025.
The senior African diplomat warned that terrorist organizations have significantly escalated their attacks while implementing brutal tactics including blockades that cut off essential supplies to vulnerable communities.
"The deliberate targeting of innocent civilians is utterly unacceptable," Youssouf declared. "These acts of terror have caused severe human suffering and worsened instability across the Sahel region."
International Community Called to Action
Youssouf made an impassioned appeal for immediate international support, specifically urging world powers to unite in addressing the escalating crisis. He emphasized the critical need for what he termed "a robust, coordinated, and coherent response" to counter terrorism and violent extremism throughout the Sahel.
"We urge all partners to enhance intelligence sharing, strengthen cooperation, and provide sustained support to the affected states," the AU chairperson stated. "The African Union cannot stand alone in this struggle."
This urgent call for action aligns with the Communiqué issued during the 1304th AU ministerial meeting held on September 30, 2025, which highlighted the necessity of collective security measures throughout the region.
Condemnation of Human Rights Violations
The AU chairperson also strongly condemned the recent wave of kidnappings, including the abduction of three Egyptian nationals. Youssouf characterized these incidents as "grave violations of human rights and international humanitarian law" and demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all captives.
"These acts of lawlessness must not go unpunished," he asserted. "The safety of all civilians and humanitarian workers must remain a top priority."
Reaffirming the African Union's solidarity with both the Government and people of Mali, Youssouf assured that the AU remains prepared to provide necessary assistance to countries across the Sahel region.
"The African Union stands firmly with Mali and its neighbors during this challenging period," he affirmed. "We are committed to supporting all efforts that promote peace, stability, and sustainable development in the region."
The AU Chairperson extended heartfelt condolences to families of victims affected by the ongoing violence and reiterated the organization's "unwavering commitment" to restoring security and hope throughout Mali.
