The Nigerian government has announced a dramatic 81 percent reduction in terror-related fatalities across the country since 2015, marking significant progress in the nation's long-standing security challenges.
Security Operations Yield Major Results
According to a statement released by the Presidency on Sunday, November 9, this substantial decline stems from intensified counter-insurgency measures and improved collaboration between security forces and local communities. More than 13,000 terrorists have been eliminated during the past year alone, while over 124,000 fighters and their family members have surrendered to authorities.
The enhanced security situation has enabled the return of normalcy to previously affected regions, with more than 2.1 million internally displaced persons successfully returning to their homes. Communities that once suffered from violent attacks are now being rebuilt, allowing residents to resume their daily lives.
Government Initiatives and Judicial Progress
The Federal Government has established a comprehensive Resettlement Scheme designed to support conflict-affected populations. This program focuses on reconstructing damaged communities and facilitating the reintegration of displaced citizens into society.
Judicial efforts have also intensified, with more than 124 terrorists convicted since 2024. Several high-profile cases are currently underway, including trials for members of the Ansaru leadership and individuals connected to the 2022 Owo church bombing and Yelwata reprisal attacks in Benue State.
Strengthened Security Framework
Since 2023, improved inter-agency coordination has led to the arrest, elimination, or successful prosecution of terrorists responsible for some of Nigeria's deadliest attacks. The government highlighted several ongoing security enhancements, including:
- Joint security task forces operating across multiple regions
- Reinforced border patrols with local and international partners
- Compensation programs for victims of terrorism
- Permanent joint patrols in high-risk areas
- Intelligence sharing partnerships with global allies
These comprehensive measures represent a multi-faceted approach to protecting Nigerian citizens and strengthening national security infrastructure for long-term stability.
