OPC Calls for International Partnership Against Terrorism
The Oodua People's Congress (OPC) has strongly advised President Bola Tinubu to pursue global cooperation, including potential collaboration with the United States, to decisively address the escalating terrorism crisis in Nigeria. This recommendation comes in response to recent statements from US President Donald Trump threatening action against Nigerian terrorist groups.
In an official statement released on Tuesday by Secretary-General Olubunmi Fasehun, the Yoruba socio-cultural organization emphasized that the federal government should immediately capitalize on Trump's offer to assist Nigeria in eliminating terrorist organizations that have severely strained the country's military capabilities.
Grassroots Security Support Offered
The OPC has reaffirmed its readiness to work closely with Nigeria's security apparatus, including the police, Department of State Services (DSS), and armed forces. The group highlighted its unique positioning for enhanced intelligence gathering and community surveillance across multiple states.
"Our members are embedded within communities, markets, border towns, and rural corridors where critical intelligence can be collected," Fasehun stated. "We are prepared to serve as the eyes and ears within our communities, transmitting verified information to appropriate authorities."
The organization's extensive network spans the South-West region, Kogi, Kwara, Edo, and Delta states, making it a valuable partner for early threat detection and prevention. Fasehun clarified that the OPC aims to complement rather than replace official security agencies, operating strictly within legal boundaries.
Confronting Terrorism Financing
The OPC further urged the Tinubu administration to take decisive action against individuals and networks allegedly financing or benefiting from terrorist activities. The group insisted that national security considerations must override political calculations in this critical matter.
"The government must demonstrate courage in confronting powerful individuals long perceived as untouchable," Fasehun added, emphasizing the need to identify and freeze assets of terrorism sponsors both within Nigeria and internationally.
The organization called for strengthened cooperation with the United States and other developed nations to effectively track and disrupt financial flows to terrorist organizations. This international collaboration, combined with domestic efforts, represents what the OPC believes could be a turning point in Nigeria's security challenges.
Fasehun concluded by reaffirming OPC's unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and security throughout Yorubaland and the entire Nigerian federation, stressing that the current security situation requires both local expertise and international partnership.
