National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu has delivered a powerful declaration that the Nigerian federal government considers violence framed along religious lines as a direct assault on the state itself. Speaking at the conclusion of a significant US-Nigeria Joint Working Group session in Abuja, Ribadu emphasized that protecting all citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs, represents an absolute and non-negotiable priority for the administration.
Protection of Plural Society
According to presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, Ribadu articulated Nigeria's fundamental commitment to safeguarding its diverse population. "Nigeria is a deeply plural society, and the protection of all citizens, Christians, Muslims, and those of other beliefs, is non-negotiable," Ribadu stated unequivocally. He further reinforced this position by asserting that "violence framed along religious lines is treated as an attack on the Nigerian state itself." This strong language underscores the government's determination to address sectarian conflicts as matters of national security rather than isolated incidents.
Tangible Gains in Security Cooperation
In a subsequent post on social media platform X, Ribadu highlighted that the joint working group has achieved "tangible operational gains" in the ongoing battle against terrorism. This bilateral mechanism was established following Nigeria's designation as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) by former US President Donald Trump, a classification that typically prompts targeted policy actions to address severe violations of religious freedom.
The Abuja meeting featured substantial delegations from both nations. Ribadu led Nigeria's contingent, which included representatives from ten different ministries and agencies. The United States delegation, comprising eight federal agencies, was headed by Allison Hooker, the US Under-Secretary of State. This high-level participation demonstrates the seriousness both governments attach to security collaboration.
From Dialogue to Action
Ribadu reported that Nigeria-US security cooperation has progressed significantly from mere dialogue to concrete action. This enhanced partnership has yielded measurable results, including the disruption of terrorist networks and transnational criminal organizations operating within and beyond Nigeria's borders. The National Security Adviser specifically acknowledged American support over the past five years, which has included the provision of drones, helicopters, various platforms, spare parts, and other critical support systems that have bolstered Nigeria's counter-terrorism capabilities.
US Commitment to Partnership
Allison Hooker, addressing the session, reaffirmed the United States' dedication to expanding its partnership with Nigeria. She pinpointed a particular focus on deterring violence against Christian communities as a key area of collaboration. "Today, we are here to discuss how we can work together to deter violence against Christian communities, prioritising counter-terrorism, insecurity, investigation of attacks, and holding perpetrators accountable," Hooker explained.
She elaborated that joint efforts would concentrate on reducing the alarming rates of killings, forced displacement, and abductions targeting Christians, especially in Nigeria's north-central states where such incidents have been prevalent. This targeted approach reflects a strategic alignment between both nations' security objectives, aiming to create a safer environment for all religious groups within Nigeria.
