Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has warmly received the state's sports contingents following their outstanding performances in various competitions across Nigeria. The governor hosted the athletes at a special reception ceremony held in their honor on November 25, 2025.
Celebrating Sporting Excellence
During the reception event, Governor Aliyu expressed his administration's pride in the athletes' remarkable achievements. He specifically praised their commitment, dedication, and resilience that led to winning numerous trophies and medals in different sporting competitions.
The governor assured the athletes of continued support from his administration, emphasizing that this backing would ensure improved performance in future engagements. "You have made us proud, and the state is happy with your performance," Aliyu stated. "Please keep the flag flying."
Boosting Sports Infrastructure
In a significant move to support local sports, Governor Aliyu announced the donation of a 36-seater bus to Sokoto United Football Club. This donation aims to address the mobility challenges that have been affecting the team's operations and performance.
The governor emphasized the growing importance of sports as a major employer of labor worldwide. "As you are aware, sport has now become a major employer of labour across the globe," he noted. "Therefore, my administration will continue to encourage sporting activities in the State."
Call for Private Sector Involvement
Governor Aliyu used the opportunity to call on wealthy individuals and stakeholders within Sokoto State to invest in sports development. He stressed the importance of private sector participation in identifying and nurturing more talented footballers and athletes across various communities in the state.
The governor also commended the Ministry of Youth and Sports, along with the management of Sokoto United, Rima Strikers, and Rima Queens, for providing the athletes with necessary skills and training. He urged them to maintain the current momentum in developing sporting talent throughout Sokoto State.
