Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Quevin Castro has died at the age of 25 after collapsing during a pre-season friendly match in Lisbon, Portugal, on Saturday. Castro was playing for fourth-division side Real Sport Clube against top-flight Estrela de Amadora at the Estadio das Seixas when he fell to the ground in the first half.
Death Confirmed by Football Association
The Lisbon Football Association (AFL) confirmed that Castro "passed away this morning during the pre-season friendly". The exact cause of death has not been disclosed by the association or the club.
Real Sport Clube described the midfielder as a "beloved member of our sporting family". In a statement, the club said: "Quevin Castro was much more than just a player; he was an integral part of our family, leaving an indelible mark on all those who knew him."
Career in England and Return to Portugal
Castro, who grew up in Thetford in Norfolk, joined West Brom in 2021. He made his debut for the club against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, and his second appearance came against Swansea later that season. He then joined Burton Albion on loan.
Before his time at West Brom, Castro was a product of the Sporting Clube academy. He also played for several English clubs, including Cambridge City, York City, and Notts County, before returning to Portugal last summer.
West Brom Tribute Planned
West Bromwich Albion said they were "devastated" by the news of Castro's death. The club will pay tribute to the midfielder with a period of applause in the 25th minute of their Championship fixture against Burnley on Sunday, as well as wearing black armbands.
The tribute reflects the impact Castro had during his time at the club, where he made a handful of senior appearances before departing. The football community in both England and Portugal has expressed condolences following the sudden loss.
