Chukwueze Tells Amorim: I Can Adapt to New Role

Super Eagles winger Samuel Chukwueze delivered a standout performance in AC Milan's 4-2 pre-season friendly victory over Manchester United on August 15, scoring once and providing two assists. The 27-year-old, who returned to Milan after a loan spell at Fulham, was the highest-rated player on the pitch. Following the match, Chukwueze addressed the challenge of adapting to a new role under coach Ruben Amorim, who has deployed him as a wing-back in a 3-4-3 system—a position he has never played in his professional career.

Chukwueze's Message to Amorim

Speaking to Italian outlet Gazzetta, Chukwueze acknowledged the difficulty of the transition but expressed confidence in his ability to succeed. "Yes, even though it's a position I need to adapt to because I've never played in this role in my career," he said. "As a footballer, if a coach wants you to play in a certain position, you have to do it by believing in yourself and in the coach, because he knows what he wants."

He added that he views the challenge as an opportunity. "So, I just need to keep committing, believing in myself, and knowing that I can do it. For me, it's an opportunity I have to seize. I know it's a difficult task, but I believe in myself. I know I can do it, I can do anything."

Chukwueze also revealed the coaching staff's active involvement in his development. "It's the first time I'm playing in this position, so I'm continuing to work hard. I need to improve with every training session. I think the technical staff are helping me. The coach is also helping me. Every time I make a mistake, he tells me: 'Oh, Chukwueze, this is what you need to do.' So, I think I'll improve before the start of the season."

Amorim's Faith in Chukwueze

Despite speculation that Milan would sell Chukwueze after two difficult seasons, Amorim publicly committed to keeping the Nigerian when he addressed the press for the first time after his appointment, according to GOAL. Amorim, known for his 3-4-3 system, has used Chukwueze as a wing-back for at least 45 minutes in every pre-season fixture.

Upcoming Serie A Opener

The Manchester United match was Milan's final pre-season game. The Rossoneri will face Torino at the Stadio Olimpico di Torino on August 23 in the opening round of the 2026/27 Serie A season. Chukwueze is expected to start in his new position, having impressed during pre-season. His performance against Man United suggests he could be a key asset for Milan in the upcoming campaign.
