Imo State Gears Up for 2026 Niger Delta Games, Aims to Topple Bayelsa & Delta
Imo Ready for Second Niger Delta Games, Says Onyeocha

The Imo State government has announced its complete preparedness for the second edition of the Niger Delta Games, setting its sights on climbing the medals table against regional powerhouses. The event, which unites budding athletes from the nine states of the oil-rich region, is scheduled to hold later this year in Benin, Edo State.

Full Mobilisation Across Local Councils

Obinna Onyeocha, the Chairman of the Imo State Liaison Committee for the Games and the State Commissioner for Sports, made the declaration in Owerri. He revealed that the committee has successfully mobilised all local government areas within the state. The objective is a thorough screening and scouting process to register the very best athletes for the upcoming state trials.

The primary ambition, as stated by Onyeocha, is to successfully challenge the dominance of Bayelsa and Delta states on the medals table. To achieve this, the state is determined to improve upon its performance from the first games, which were held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Structured Collaboration with Sports Associations

Onyeocha detailed a structured approach to talent identification, emphasizing collaboration with the 17 accredited state sports associations and their coaches. This partnership is designed to ensure a successful and comprehensive scouting exercise across all disciplines.

"We in the State Liaison Committee have been working with recognised sports associations," Onyeocha said. He added that they have appealed to every local government area to ensure the prompt registration of eligible athletes. This step is crucial to guaranteeing full and competitive representation for Imo State at the regional tournament.

Young Talents Identified and Ready

Expressing confidence in the state's preparations, the Sports Commissioner confirmed that promising young talents have already been identified and mobilised from various communities. "Imo State is fully prepared for the Games," Onyeocha asserted, underscoring the state's commitment to not just participate, but to make a significant impact.

The Niger Delta Games serves as a critical platform for uncovering and nurturing athletic talent within the region, offering honours and fame to its participants. With its intensified grassroots mobilisation and strategic partnerships, Imo State signals its serious intent to become a major force in the 2026 competition.
