Lagos Races to Top 3 Finish at Enugu 2026 National Sports Festival
Lagos Intensifies Preparations for Enugu 2026 Sports Fest

Lagos State has launched an intensive training program as preparations accelerate for the 2026 National Sports Festival scheduled to take place in Enugu. The state's sporting bodies have mobilized athletes across multiple disciplines, determined to improve upon their sixth-place finish at the previous Gateway Games in Abeokuta.

Athletes in High Gear at Teslim Balogun

Recent visits to the Teslim Balogun Stadium revealed a hive of activity as athletes pushed through their routines under the watchful eyes of coaches and officials. The training facility has transformed into a high-performance center with athletes working diligently to achieve peak condition for what many consider Nigeria's premier sporting competition.

Team Lagos officials have confirmed they are targeting a top-three finish in Enugu, aiming to reclaim the state's position as the nation's sports hub. The ambitious goal comes after what officials describe as internal challenges that affected their performance in Abeokuta, though these issues have now been resolved according to team management.

Strategic Overhaul for Better Performance

Mr. Kooz Taiwo, a key official with Team Lagos, explained that comprehensive reviews are underway to strengthen the squad. "Everybody involved in Team Lagos wants improvement; they want Lagos State to rise to the top," he stated during an interview.

The strategic overhaul includes reviewing contract coaches and staffing decisions while ensuring athletes receive both mental and technical development. Discussions are focused on creating holistic training programs that address all aspects of athlete preparation ahead of the festival.

Coaches Confident of Medal Haul

Boxing team coach Anthony Mbawego expressed strong confidence in his team's readiness. "We are ready to go because all our athletes have been in training," he declared. "We know we are good. Whenever we compete, they always challenge us in Lagos State, but we prepare our boxers well. We are going there to collect medals as always."

His confidence was echoed by volleyball coach Ajawo Lateef, who believes new team members will significantly boost Lagos State's medal prospects. "We need more players for the team, even with the ones already on ground. With more support and the right structure, Lagos State volleyball teams are bound to do well at the National Sports Festival," Lateef explained.

The intensified preparations demonstrate Lagos State's serious commitment to sporting excellence as the countdown to Enugu 2026 continues. With athletes training across multiple facilities and coaches implementing strategic improvements, Team Lagos appears positioned to make a strong statement at the national competition.
