AFN Intensifies Efforts to Bring Back Sprinter Ashe Favour
Amidst the focus on the Botswana trials, top officials from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) have reportedly been making persistent efforts to convince sprinter Ashe Favour to rejoin Team Nigeria. Ashe, recognized as one of Nigeria's fastest sprinters in recent years, has shifted his allegiance to Qatar, a move aimed at advancing his track and field career and securing financial benefits.
Despite his ineligibility to compete for Qatar until 2028, Ashe has remained active by participating with various athletics clubs during this interim period. AFN officials and other concerned Nigerians have been reaching out to him with late-night phone calls, offering to double his training grants and provide additional incentives to entice his return.
Nigeria's Current Relay Standings and Botswana Objectives
Nigeria has already secured qualification in four relay events: the women's 4x100m, women's 4x400m, mixed 4x100m, and men's 4x400m. However, the mission in Botswana is twofold: to add more qualification tickets and to refine team combinations ahead of the global competition in May.
The AFN has emphasized that athletes have been diligently honing their baton exchanges and race strategies in preparation for the Botswana National Trials, underscoring the importance of this event as a final tune-up before the World Athletics Relays.

The Botswana Athletics National Championships, hosted at the National Stadium, will also serve as the country's final selection trial for the relays, heightening the competition for local athletes.
