Nigeria's women's beach volleyball team has secured a historic first-ever qualification for the Olympic Games, defeating Morocco 2-0 in the final of the 2026 CAVB Women's Beach Volleyball Championship. The victory, achieved on Saturday in Alexandria, Egypt, guarantees Nigeria a spot at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, United States.
Dominant Final Performance Secures Gold and Olympic Ticket
In the championship match, the Nigerian duo won both sets against Morocco with scores of 21-17 and 21-10, clinching the gold medal and the coveted Olympic berth. Earlier on the same day, Nigeria had advanced to the final by dispatching Mozambique in the semi-final, winning both sets 21-17.
The achievement marks a significant milestone for Nigerian volleyball, ending years of near-misses in Olympic qualification attempts.
NVBF President Celebrates National Triumph
The President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), Musa Nimrod, expressed his elation over the team's performance, dedicating the victory to the entire nation. He highlighted the team's persistence after finishing as runners-up on three previous occasions.
"I wish to congratulate Nigerians and thank God. This is the fourth time we are going into the finals; we finished in second place on three occasions," Mr Nimrod said. "God has done it for us on our fourth trial and given us victory. It is not the Nigeria Volleyball Federation's success alone but the entire nation," he added.
