Oborevwori Rewards Special Athletes with Kits and Cash
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, through the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Onoriode Oborevwori, on Saturday made a surprise visit to Team Delta’s special athletes camped in Lagos. During the visit, he presented them with training kits, cash gifts, and assurances of continued government support. Each athlete received training kits, tracksuits, water bottles, and other sporting materials to aid their preparation, while the Commission also donated N500,000 to the team.
Commission Fulfills Promises to Athletes
Speaking with The Guardian, Onoriode Oborevwori said the visit was part of the Commission’s commitment to appreciating the athletes for their dedication and patience. “Earlier this year, we visited them here in Lagos and assured them of the Delta State Government’s continued support. That visit was important because Team Delta could not participate in the Para Games held in Abuja. We made some promises then, and my visit today is to fulfil those promises,” he stated.
He added that the athletes’ request for sporting equipment has been approved by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. “These athletes are very special to us, and the Delta State Sports Commission will continue to do everything possible to support and encourage them. Soon, our special athletes will have access to world-class training equipment in Asaba, and they will train there once or twice every month as part of preparations for the 2026 National Sports Festival in Enugu,” he said.
Delta Sponsors US-Based Athletes for Commonwealth Trials
Meanwhile, Delta State is sponsoring about 10 United States-based athletes to participate in the 2026 Commonwealth Games National Trials, which begin on Sunday at Yaba College of Technology, Lagos. The trials were originally scheduled for Saturday but were postponed by a day after the athletes could not depart the United States on Friday due to thunderstorms that disrupted flight operations.
Among the Team Delta athletes expected at the trials are Nyenuchi Okemgbo (400m hurdles), Chukwuebuka Enekwechi (shot put), Oyesade Olatoye (women’s hammer throw and shot put), Dolapo Divine Oladipo (women’s shot put and discus), Obiageri Amaechi (women’s discus), Jami Schlueter (decathlon and pole vault), and Adaobi Orjiugo Tabugbo (women’s 100m hurdles). The athletes are being accompanied by US-based coach Gabriel Opuana, who has joined Team Delta’s technical crew for the competition.
