Onome Didih breaks three Commonwealth records for Nigeria's fifth gold

Team Nigeria continued its impressive medal haul at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Monday, with weightlifter Onome Omolola Didih claiming the country's fifth gold medal in record-breaking fashion. Didih dominated the women's 53kg event from start to finish, rewriting the Commonwealth Games record books with three new marks.

Didih's Record-Breaking Performance

The Nigerian lifter opened with a snatch of 93kg, setting a new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth record. She followed with a clean and jerk of 113kg, also a Games and Commonwealth record, before finishing with a total lift of 206kg—another Games and Commonwealth record. Her performance placed her comfortably ahead of the competition.

India's Gyaneshwari Yadav took the silver medal with a total of 199kg, while Canada's Rebeka Groulx earned bronze with 178kg. Didih's triumph marked a continuation of Nigeria's strong showing in weightlifting, coming just hours after Edidiong Umoafia secured the nation's fourth gold in the men's 71kg event.

Nigeria's Other Gold Medalists

Umoafia lifted a Commonwealth Games record total of 319kg in the men's 71kg weightlifting, comprising 147kg in the snatch and 172kg in the clean and jerk. He finished ahead of Samoa's Joseph Tafi and Nauru's Elgin Moses, further boosting Nigeria's medal tally.

The country's gold medal account was opened through para powerlifting, with Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, and Riluwan Idris all claiming titles on the opening days of the Games. Their victories set the tone for Nigeria's continued success.

Silver Medal Achievements

Nigeria has also secured several silver medals at the Games. Roland Ezuruike, Esther Oyema, Rita Ferdinand, and weightlifter Ruth Asuquo Nyong all finished as runners-up in their respective events, contributing to the nation's strong medal count.

Looking Ahead

With athletics and more weightlifting events still scheduled for later on Monday, Team Nigeria will be aiming to build on its remarkable run. The country is pushing for more medals as the Games progress, with athletes in peak form and record-breaking performances becoming a hallmark of their campaign.

Nigeria's total of five gold medals so far places it among the leading nations in the Commonwealth Games medal table, with the potential for further success in the remaining days of competition.
