Lagos Set to Host Inaugural EKO 170 Cycling Spectacle
Nigeria is about to witness a historic sporting event as Lagos State prepares to launch the EKO 170, a massive 170-kilometre cycling challenge. Scheduled for its grand debut on January 11, 2026, this initiative marks a significant milestone in the nation's sporting calendar, designed to position Lagos as a premier hub for sports tourism, healthy living, and sustainable transportation.
Government Backing and Strategic Vision
The Lagos Gran Fondo ‘EKO 170’ has received full endorsement from the Lagos State government. The event is a strategic component of the administration's development agenda, aligning with key pillars such as:
- Traffic management and transportation
- Health and environment
- Entertainment and tourism
- Making Lagos a 21st-century economy
During the official launch, the Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, emphasized the event's broader significance. He stated that EKO 170 showcases Lagos's dedication to innovation, sustainability, and achieving global standards. He described it as a world-class experience that will promote healthier lifestyles and solidify the state's reputation as a model megacity in Africa.
The Route, Participants, and Community Impact
More than 1,000 cyclists, comprising both elite professional riders and amateur enthusiasts from within Nigeria and internationally, are expected to line up for this challenge. The meticulously planned 170km route will start and finish at the iconic Eko Atlantic City.
The course will take participants on a scenic tour through:
- Victoria Island
- The Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge
- The Lekki–Epe Expressway to Epe
before looping back for a grand finale. Developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Transportation and the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the route has been designed to guarantee maximum safety for all participants while causing minimal disruption to the city's traffic flow.
