Akure, the capital city of Ondo State, will come alive this weekend as 12 teams from Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti states compete in the South West 3×3 Basketball Challenge. Organized by the South West Basketball Zone, the championship is tagged as the Asiwaju Renewed Hope South West 3×3 Basketball Challenge and will take place at Democracy Park, Oja Oba, Akure, on May 16 and 17, 2026.

Tournament Details and Sponsorship

Speaking ahead of the event, the South West representative on the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation, Olumide Oyedeji, confirmed that the championship is sponsored by the Honourable Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. Oyedeji emphasized that the tournament provides another opportunity for basketball players in the zone to engage in competitive action and showcase their talents.

Focus on 3×3 Format

Oyedeji explained the choice of the 3×3 format, stating that it has become a global phenomenon. He noted that it was time for the zone to promote this variant and discover new talents within the region. The 3×3 format offers fast-paced, exciting games that are popular worldwide.

Prizes and Support for Teams

Beyond the cash prizes, which run into millions of naira, Oyedeji disclosed that all 12 participating teams will receive accommodation, meals, and jerseys. Additionally, each team will get a transportation subsidy to ease their logistics.

Entertainment and Networking

Oyedeji thanked the minister for his support and promised that fans would be treated to top-level entertainment throughout the two-day event. The championship will also serve as a meeting point for basketball stakeholders across the zone, fostering camaraderie and networking.
