D'Tigress Crush Colombia 70-37 in FIBA World Cup Qualifier Opener
Nigeria's women's national basketball team, D'Tigress, launched their FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup qualifying campaign with an emphatic 70-37 victory over Colombia in France. The commanding performance secured their first win of the tournament and demonstrated their status as a rising force in international basketball.
Dominant Second Half Seals Convincing Victory
The game saw Nigeria start strongly, establishing an 18-12 lead in the opening quarter. Colombia responded with a slightly better second-quarter display, edging that period 17-16, but still trailed heading into halftime. The reigning African champions completely took control after the break, delivering a defensive masterclass that left Colombia struggling to score.
D'Tigress outscored Colombia 19-5 in the third quarter and followed with a 17-3 fourth-quarter performance, sealing a convincing 33-point victory. Colombia managed only eight points in the entire second half, highlighting Nigeria's defensive discipline and tactical superiority.
Wakama's Impressive Coaching Record
The win marked the 14th victory for head coach Rena Wakama since she took charge of the team in 2023. Under her leadership, the team has played 18 competitive matches, recording 14 wins and four defeats. Wakama has also guided Nigeria to the 2023 and 2025 titles at the FIBA Women's Afrobasket, cementing her reputation as one of Africa's top basketball coaches.
D'Tigress are currently ranked eighth in the world by FIBA, reflecting their consistent progress in international competitions. One of their most notable achievements remains reaching the quarter-finals of the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup, a testament to their growing stature on the global stage.
Key Performers and Tactical Execution
In the match against Colombia, Nigeria controlled the pace with aggressive defence and efficient transition play. Victoria Macaulay led the scoring for D'Tigress with 13 points, delivering this performance in just over 14 minutes on the court. Ifunaya Okoro also reached double figures, contributing 10 points after playing more than 28 minutes.
Colombia struggled to penetrate Nigeria's organised defence throughout the game, particularly in the second half where their scoring opportunities were severely limited. Nigeria's ability to maintain defensive intensity while executing offensively proved decisive in securing the comprehensive victory.
Looking Ahead to South Korea Clash
Nigeria will face South Korea women's national basketball team in their next group match scheduled for Thursday as they continue their campaign in France. This victory provides strong momentum as D'Tigress aim to secure qualification for the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup and build on their impressive international record under coach Wakama's guidance.
