Tinubu Calls Anthony Joshua After Fatal Ogun State Crash

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has personally reached out to offer his sympathy and support to Nigerian-British boxing icon Anthony Joshua. This follows a devastating road accident in Ogun State that left the former heavyweight champion injured and claimed the lives of two of his close associates.

Presidential Phone Calls and Condolences

According to a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, on Monday, December 29, 2025, President Tinubu spoke directly with Joshua via telephone. The President, who is currently abroad, conveyed his heartfelt condolences over the tragic loss of life.

"I spoke with AJ on the phone to personally convey my condolences over the death of his two associates. I wished him well and prayed for him. He assured me that he is receiving the best care in the hospital," President Tinubu stated.

The President also extended his comfort to Joshua's mother during a separate call, which she deeply appreciated. Furthermore, he communicated with Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, who was present at the hospital. Governor Abiodun assured the President that everything possible was being done to ensure Joshua received optimal medical attention.

Official Statements and Public Concern

Earlier, President Tinubu had expressed his profound sympathy in a post on the social media platform X. He praised Joshua's courage and discipline, qualities that have made him a source of national pride, and offered prayers for strength and a speedy recovery.

Meanwhile, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, provided a detailed update on the health status of those involved. He confirmed that Anthony Joshua and another injured passenger were swiftly evacuated to a specialised medical facility in Lagos State following the crash on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

"Following several clinical assessments, doctors have confirmed that both patients are stable and do not require any emergency interventions at this time," Governor Sanwo-Olu stated on Monday evening. He added that a comprehensive medical team is closely monitoring their condition.

Investigation and Appeals for Privacy

Governor Sanwo-Olu disclosed that Joshua is conscious, communicating well with his family, and responding positively to care. He also noted that the governments of Lagos and Ogun States are collaborating to provide all necessary support.

In response to the incident, authorities have already launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. The goal is to establish what led to the tragedy and to prevent similar occurrences on the busy expressway in the future.

The Governor thanked the public for their outpouring of concern and prayers since the news broke. However, he earnestly appealed for privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family as they navigate this difficult period of recovery and mourning.
