In a significant moment for Nigerian football, Ahmed Musa has officially announced his retirement from international duty. The announcement, made on Wednesday, 17 December 2025, brings an end to a storied career with the Super Eagles that spanned nearly 15 years.
A Journey of Pride and Dedication
In a heartfelt statement, Musa expressed the profound meaning of representing Nigeria. He revealed that his journey began as a teenager when he received simultaneous invitations to the U-20, U-23, and senior national teams. "I was just a young boy when the journey started," Musa recalled. "Whenever Nigeria called, I showed up. It was never something I had to think twice about."
His commitment never wavered, culminating in 111 appearances for his country, making him Nigeria's most-capped footballer. He described this record as a great honour and a privilege, emphasizing the deep responsibility he felt every time he wore the iconic green and white jersey.
Memorable Highlights and Historic Feats
Musa's career is decorated with unforgettable achievements that have cemented his legacy in Nigerian sports history. He was a key member of the squad that triumphed at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in South Africa.
However, his performances on the world's biggest stage are perhaps most iconic. At the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, he scored a brilliant brace against Argentina, becoming the first Nigerian to score more than once in a single World Cup match. He repeated this feat four years later, netting twice against Iceland at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. This made him the first Nigerian to score in two different World Cup tournaments.
"To score four goals at the World Cup and be Nigeria’s highest goalscorer on that stage is something I am truly grateful for," Musa stated, reflecting on these historic moments.
Gratitude and a New Chapter in Administration
As he steps away, Musa extended his sincere thanks to everyone who supported his journey. "I express gratitude to teammates, coaches, administrators and fans for their support throughout my career," he said. His closing words resonated with finality and love: "Once an Eagle, always an Eagle. Thank you, Nigeria."
While his time on the pitch for Nigeria is over, Musa's involvement in football is set to continue. He has already begun a transition into football administration. After returning to Kano Pillars for a third stint in October 2024, he has now taken up the role of General Manager at the club ahead of the 2025–26 Nigeria Professional Football League season. This move signals a clear shift from player to executive, where he will apply his vast experience to the administrative side of the sport he loves.
