Legendary Nigerian striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni has pinpointed the two key players he believes can propel the Super Eagles to victory at the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
From World Cup Disappointment to AFCON Ambition
The Super Eagles are shifting their focus to continental glory after the bitter disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the team has been drawn in Group C alongside Tunisia, Tanzania, and Uganda for the tournament in Morocco, where they will be chasing a fourth AFCON title.
This campaign carries extra weight as Nigeria seeks redemption for their heartbreaking loss in the final of the 2023 edition. On that occasion, goals from Franck Kessie and Sebastian Haller for host nation Cote d'Ivoire overturned William Troost-Ekong's opener, leaving the Eagles as runners-up.
Aiyegbeni's Winning Formula: Osimhen and Bassey
In a recent interview, Aiyegbeni expressed strong belief in Nigeria's chances, contingent on reaching the final. He singled out Napoli's Victor Osimhen and Fulham's Calvin Bassey as the pivotal figures for success.
"I'm still going to tip Nigeria. If we get to the final, then we can win it," the former Everton forward told Sporting Cast.
He lavished praise on Osimhen, describing him as the team's undisputed leader. "Victor Osimhen, he has been the number one. He's Nigeria's best player. He's like a leader in the team. You see the aggression, the fight, he gives everything on the pitch," Aiyegbeni said.
He was equally impressed with defender Calvin Bassey's contributions. "Then you have Calvin Bassey, the central defender from Fulham. Bassey is really solid in the team. He is a fighter, he gives 100%," he added.
Aiyegbeni concluded by highlighting the importance of an AFCON win to heal national wounds, stating, "I hope Nigeria can get to the final and win it, to bring that joy for not going to the World Cup."
The Road to Redemption in Morocco
For Victor Osimhen, the tournament represents a critical opportunity. The Galatasaray striker will be eager to avoid the unwanted tag of an African great who never won the continental trophy. At 26, time is on his side, but the unpredictable nature of African football means seizing the moment is crucial.
The Super Eagles' group stage schedule is as follows:
- They open their campaign against Tanzania on December 23, 2025.
- They face Tunisia on December 27, 2025.
- They conclude the group stage against Uganda on December 30, 2025.
The match against Tunisia holds particular significance, as the Carthage Eagles eliminated Nigeria in the Round of 16 during the 2021 AFCON.
The team's ambition is clear: to go all the way in Morocco and soothe the dual disappointments of the 2023 final loss and the missed World Cup. With the backing of legends like Yakubu Aiyegbeni and the identified key players in top form, the Super Eagles will aim to turn aspiration into triumph.
