The Federation of Algerian Football (FAF) has officially submitted a petition to FIFA regarding the officiating in their World Cup group stage match against Argentina. The Desert Foxes suffered a 3-0 defeat to the defending champions in their Group J opener, with Lionel Messi scoring a hat-trick.
Messi's Challenge Sparks Controversy
In the 41st minute, with Argentina leading 1-0, Messi planted a studs-up challenge on Algerian captain Aissa Mandi's calf. Referee Szymon Marciniak did not issue a booking, let alone a red card. Many observers believe Messi should have been dismissed, which would have prevented him from scoring two more goals to complete his hat-trick and tie Miroslav Klose as the all-time top scorer in World Cup history.
FAF's Petition to FIFA
According to L'Equipe, FAF has written to the FIFA referee's committee citing two incidents that were not properly addressed. The first was Messi's stamp on Mandi, which went unpunished beyond a free kick. The second was Alexis Mac Allister's elbow on Ibrahim Maza, which also escaped sanction despite VAR being available. FAF argues these decisions could have influenced the match outcome.
Reactions and Previous Reports
Legit.ng previously reported why Messi was not sent off, noting the incident sparked accusations of favoritism from FIFA. The Polish referee's decision not to even book Messi drew widespread criticism. Elijah Odetokun, a Nigerian sports editor with six years of experience, covered the story. He holds a Bachelor of Agriculture from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, and a Diploma in Freelance and Sports Writing from the London School of Journalism.
