Football Analyst Urges NFF to Reject Eric Chelle's Demands After AFCON Bronze
A prominent Nigerian public commentator has strongly advised the Nigeria Football Federation against honoring the alleged conditions set by Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle following the team's recent performances. Japheth Omojuwa, a well-known voice in sports discourse, has reacted to reports that the Franco-Malian tactician has presented a list of demands to continue managing the national team.
Chelle's Reported Conditions and Performance Background
Eric Chelle, who was appointed in January 2025 on a one-year contract with a monthly salary of $50,000, reportedly failed to secure Nigeria's qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Super Eagles finished second in their qualifying group with 17 points, just behind South Africa's Bafana Bafana who accumulated 18 points. Despite this setback, Chelle was given another opportunity through the African playoffs but squandered it with a 4-3 penalty shootout loss at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat last November.
The Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation subsequently permitted Chelle to lead the team to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with the specific condition of reaching the final. Under his guidance, the Super Eagles began their AFCON campaign strongly, securing three consecutive wins in the group stage against Tanzania, Tunisia, and Uganda. They advanced with a 4-0 victory over Mozambique in the Round of 16 and a 2-0 win against Algeria in the quarterfinals before falling to host Morocco in the semifinals via a 4-2 penalty shootout.
Nigeria ultimately claimed a record ninth AFCON bronze medal by defeating Egypt 4-2 on penalties, with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali emerging as a key hero in the match. Following this achievement, many Nigerians, including members of the current squad, advocated for Chelle's retention despite the earlier failures.
Substantial Demands from the Coach
Amid negotiations for a potential contract extension, Eric Chelle has reportedly requested a significant salary increase, proposing a monthly payment of $130,000. This figure is said to cover not only his own compensation but also that of his technical crew and personal assistant. Additional demands include a private SUV with a dedicated chauffeur and security detail, a house in a secure environment with uninterrupted electricity supply, and a fully furnished office equipped with modern analysis tools.
Omojuwa's Critical Response
Reacting to these demands, Japheth Omojuwa took to social media platform X to express his disapproval. He wrote, "Na God say no be me dey in charge. Lol. I am very quick to tell people who think they are all that to F off. The way dude is moving, you’d think he won us the AFCON. Someone had better tell him, the worst Super Eagles coaches, the worst of the worst of them, they will AFCON bronze. It’s par for the course. He needs to chill. We don’t send anybody like that."
Omojuwa's comments highlight a perception that winning a bronze medal at AFCON is a standard expectation for Nigeria, not an extraordinary achievement warranting such substantial demands. His remarks suggest that Chelle's performance, while decent, does not justify the reported conditions, especially considering the failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Mixed Public Reactions
The public response to Chelle's demands and Omojuwa's criticism has been divided. Some social media users defended the coach's tenure. User @okoyemekun commented, "Eric chelle has done a great work with d National Team. Nigeria was totally abysmal under d legendary Finidi George. He totally changed the playing pattern of the team and gave them so much confidence to face d best teams in Africa. D man didn't lose a match in 90 mins at d AFCON."
Another user, @ladioyebanji1, added, "For once we can see a different level of team tactics and player deployment in the Super Eagles. Eric Chelle is simply a breath of fresh air." However, others expressed skepticism, with @VIKKIEDII noting, "When we no dey even go World Cup oooo… ??." This reflects concerns about the team's broader failures under Chelle's leadership.
NFF's Stance and Broader Context
Earlier reports indicated that the Nigeria Football Federation has issued a strong warning to Eric Chelle amid interest from other African nations and clubs, including Olympique de Marseille. The 48-year-old coach was appointed following the dismissal of Jose Peseiro and the resignation of Finidi George after a poor run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. This context adds pressure to the negotiations, as the NFF balances retaining a coach who delivered an AFCON bronze against his unmet objectives and substantial demands.
The situation remains fluid, with the NFF yet to make an official decision on Chelle's future. The federation must weigh public opinion, financial constraints, and the team's performance metrics in determining whether to meet the coach's conditions or seek alternative leadership for the Super Eagles.
