The Nigerian national football team has been hit with a major setback just days before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, following the sudden international retirement of former captain William Troost-Ekong. Fellow defender Chidozie Awaziem has now broken his silence on the shocking development, admitting the squad will deeply feel the absence of their leader.
A Shocking Blow Before the Tournament
The news sent shockwaves through Nigerian football circles when Troost-Ekong, the reigning Best Player of AFCON 2023, announced his decision to step away from the international stage. This came a mere two weeks before the tournament's kick-off, despite his name being on the preliminary 54-man list. His departure creates a significant void, both defensively and in terms of leadership, especially with defender Benjamin Fredrick also ruled out due to injury.
Awaziem's Candid Reaction
Chidozie Awaziem, who is now seen as a key figure to fill the defensive gap, spoke openly about the loss. In an interview with Elegbete TV, the Nantes defender praised Ekong's immense influence.
"He is a captain to us, he was our leader, someone who most players look up to in the defence," Awaziem stated. "We learnt so many things from each other. He learnt from us, we learnt from him."
While acknowledging Ekong will be missed, Awaziem expressed confidence in the team's ability to adapt. "The guys have been with him for a long time, so we know the structure, we know the system, so we're just gonna keep everything going the same way," he added, emphasizing the need to focus on the upcoming AFCON campaign.
Ready to Step Up in Any Role
Demonstrating his commitment to the national cause, Awaziem declared his readiness to play anywhere coach Eric Chelle needs him, showcasing a team-first attitude crucial for tournament success.
"It depends on where the coach wants me to perform. I try to do my best, do everything possible to help the team," he said. "If the coach wants me to be a goalkeeper, I’m ready. If he wants me to be a striker, I’m ready."
The Super Eagles are currently fine-tuning their preparations in Fez, Morocco, ahead of their opening Group C match against Tanzania on December 23, 2025. The team is targeting a strong start with three points against the Taifa Stars.
In the wake of Ekong's retirement, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed midfielder Wilfred Ndidi as the new Super Eagles captain. Ndidi has already revealed he received advice from the retired leader, hoping to continue his legacy as the team chases glory in Morocco.
