Barcelona Edge Closer to La Liga Title with 2-0 Win at Getafe
Barcelona Near La Liga Title After 2-0 Victory at Getafe

Barcelona moved to the brink of the La Liga title after securing a 2-0 victory over Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez on Saturday. Goals from Fermín López and Marcus Rashford propelled the defending champions to an 11-point lead over second-placed Real Madrid, who could only manage a draw against Real Betis on Friday, further diminishing their hopes of ending the season with silverware.

Title within Reach

Hansi Flick’s side can clinch their second consecutive Spanish championship if they overcome Osasuna next weekend and Real Madrid fail to defeat Espanyol. The victory at Getafe was achieved without injured wingers Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, yet Barcelona still managed to overcome a stubborn Getafe side.

First Half Struggles

Getafe, under the guidance of José Bordalás, initially disrupted Barcelona’s rhythm with a series of fouls, making it difficult for the visitors to create clear-cut chances. Dani Olmo carved out the first real opportunity with a clever dribble into Getafe territory, but his shot drifted wide of the far post.

Breakthrough Before Half-Time

The deadlock was broken just before the interval. Pau Cubarsí won a crucial tackle in midfield, allowing Pedri to play an exquisite through ball to López. Wearing a protective mask after a collision with Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Juan Musso during Barcelona’s Champions League exit the previous week, López remained composed and slotted the ball into the bottom corner. The midfielder celebrated by imitating Yamal’s “304” gesture as a tribute to his injured teammate.

Second Half Dominance

With Getafe forced to push forward in search of an equalizer, Barcelona found more space after the break. David Soria saved a goal-bound effort from Olmo following a Jules Koundé cross, while Koundé himself later headed a João Cancelo delivery narrowly off-target. After Martín Satriano threatened for the hosts, Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, sealed the victory. Robert Lewandowski sent the England international charging through on goal, and he slipped a low effort past Soria in the 74th minute to put one hand on the trophy.
