Calvin Bassey Reveals Key Player Nigeria Will Miss vs Tanzania at AFCON 2025
Bassey Names Key Player Super Eagles Will Miss vs Tanzania

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has voiced his disappointment over a significant absence in Nigeria's squad as the team prepares for their opening match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Bassey Laments Fredrick's Injury Blow

The Fulham star, who is fired up for the continental tournament, highlighted that the team will sorely miss young defender Benjamin Fredrick when they face the Taifa Stars of Tanzania in their Group C opener. Fredrick sustained a knee injury last month while training with his Belgian club, Dender EH, and is only expected to return to action in the new year.

"I haven't spoken with him but I am very upset and it is painful," Bassey admitted in a recent interview. He added, "It would be very amazing to have him to showcase his talent at the AFCON." The 25-year-old centre-back believes the 20-year-old Fredrick, who has become a regular under coach Eric Chelle, would have been a major breakout star at the tournament.

Fredrick's Rise and World Cup Chemistry

Benjamin Fredrick broke into the senior national team during the 2025 Unity Cup final against Jamaica. His place was cemented due to the absence of Semi Ajayi and the injury of William Troost-Ekong. He notably put up an impressive performance during the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs, where he effectively marked Gabon's Arsenal legend, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Bassey, who scored a crucial equaliser against South Africa in a World Cup qualifier last September, also spoke on moving past the disappointment of missing the 2026 FIFA World Cup for the second consecutive time. "I don't feel any need to make amends... We're Nigeria, there's always going to be pressure," he stated, emphasizing the team's focus on giving their best in every game.

He pointed out that the chemistry he shares with teammates like Alex Iwobi and Samuel Chukwueze from their club interactions will benefit the national team. "Playing with each other for a long time, we have a great understanding of each other," Bassey noted.

Road to a Fourth AFCON Title

The Super Eagles are targeting a fourth AFCON title, having last won the trophy 13 years ago in South Africa. Their campaign begins against Tanzania at the Complexe Sportif de Fes. In a quirky pre-match prediction, a mysterious cat named Nimbus Pronos reportedly settled on a draw bowl, suggesting the points could be shared in the opening fixture.

Despite the setback of Fredrick's injury, Calvin Bassey remains optimistic and wished the young defender a speedy recovery, hoping to pair with him in future tournaments. The team, under the guidance of Eric Chelle, carries the hopes of a nation eager to end its long wait for continental glory.
