CAF Issues Heavy Sanctions Against Algerian FA Following AFCON Quarter-Final Incident
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has taken decisive disciplinary action against the Algerian Football Federation (FAF), imposing a substantial $100,000 fine and handing out multiple player suspensions. These sanctions come in response to serious breaches of conduct during and after Algeria's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 quarter-final match against Nigeria.
Chaotic Scenes in Marrakech Lead to Disciplinary Measures
The disciplinary proceedings stem from the chaotic events that unfolded at the conclusion of the match on January 10, 2026, in Marrakech, Morocco. Nigeria secured a 2-0 victory over Algeria, advancing to the semi-finals of the prestigious tournament. However, the post-match atmosphere turned contentious as several Algerian players and officials confronted match officials immediately after the final whistle.
The CAF Disciplinary Board described this behavior as "bringing the game into disrepute". The on-field altercation reportedly extended to involve some Nigerian players, who were also subjected to attacks during the scuffle.
Breakdown of the Financial Penalties
In its detailed ruling, the CAF disciplinary committee outlined the specific fines levied against the Algerian federation:
- $25,000 fine for the actions of Algerian players and officials at the end of the match, which were deemed to have brought discredit upon the competition.
- $15,000 fine for multiple offences including players receiving five yellow cards during the match, the use of smoke bombs by Algerian supporters, and the throwing of objects by fans.
- $60,000 fine for offensive gestures involving banknotes displayed by supporters against match referees, and for failing to comply with security measures due to behavior that attempted to breach security barriers.
Player Suspensions and Algerian Response
Beyond the financial penalties, CAF has suspended two Algerian national team players for their involvement in the post-match incident. Rafik Belghali received a four-match suspension, while Luca Zidane was handed a two-game ban for their roles in the altercation.
The Algerian Football Federation has responded to these sanctions by initiating an appeal process. In an official statement, the federation declared: "The Algerian Football Federation informs the public of the decision rendered by the Disciplinary Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding the incidents that occurred during the Algeria-Nigeria match."
The statement continued: "Following these decisions, the Algerian FA immediately initiated the appeals process stipulated by the regulations in order to contest these sanctions. The FA will follow developments in this case very closely."
This disciplinary action represents one of the more significant sanctions imposed by CAF in recent tournament history, highlighting the governing body's commitment to maintaining discipline and sportsmanship in African football competitions.
