The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued a statement addressing South Africa's performance after their 2-0 loss to co-hosts Mexico in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Estadio Azteca on June 11, 2026.
Mexico took an early lead in the ninth minute through Julian Quinones, the top scorer of the 2025/26 Saudi Pro League, who fired a shot that went through the legs of South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. The host nation doubled their advantage in the second half when Raul Jimenez scored his first World Cup goal at his fourth tournament, an emotional moment given his recovery from a life-threatening head injury in 2020.
The match was marred by discipline issues for South Africa. Siphephelo Sithole was sent off early in the second half for denying a goalscoring opportunity just outside the box. Later, Themba Zwane received a red card for violent conduct. Mexican captain Cesar Montes was also dismissed in the closing stages, making it three red cards in the second half.
CAF's Statement on South Africa's Performance
CAF published a statement on its website acknowledging the uphill task facing Bafana Bafana after their poor and indisciplined performance. South Africa have never advanced past the group stage in their last three World Cup appearances, and the opening defeat has made progression more difficult.
Despite the result, CAF noted that South Africa displayed resilience and, at times, showed they could be competitive. The statement concluded: "Improving discipline and cutting out costly mistakes will be key if Bafana Bafana are to revive their hopes of reaching the knockout stages."
Ronwen Williams Reacts to Defeat
South Africa captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams shared his thoughts on the loss. The Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper admitted that errors proved costly but emphasized the positives the team can take forward.
"If you make mistakes, they will punish you. They will hurt you at this level," Williams told FIFA after the match. "I think the most important thing is that now we know what we're up against, because we're not used to this. We haven't been part of the World Cup for a very long time. We went down, but we kept fighting. We didn't give them anything towards the end. We had a few decent chances as well. We'll keep fighting, we'll keep going as a team, and we'll be better."
Unwanted Record for South Africa
South Africa set an unwanted record during the match, becoming the first team to have two players sent off in the same World Cup match since Portugal and the Netherlands in 2006.
South Africa's next group stage match is against Czechia, who also lost their opening game 2-1 to South Korea. Bafana Bafana will need to improve their discipline and performance to keep their knockout stage hopes alive.
