CAF Responds to Senegal’s World Cup Heartbreak
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued a statement regarding Senegal’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign following their dramatic elimination by Belgium. Senegal lost 3-2 in extra time after leading 2-0 until the 86th minute, a collapse that CAF described as a cruel end to a promising tournament.
How Senegal Lost Control
Senegal took an early lead through Habib Diarra in the 24th minute, and Ismaila Sarr doubled the advantage in the 51st minute. However, Belgium mounted a late comeback: Romelu Lukaku scored in the 86th minute, and Youri Tielemans equalized three minutes later to force extra time. In the 125th minute, Belgium was awarded a controversial penalty, which Tielemans converted to complete the turnaround.
CAF’s Official Statement
CAF shared a post on X saying, “So close. So much to be proud of. ??”, though many disagreed with the sentiment. On its website, CAF published an extensive statement detailing Senegal’s journey, noting that the team lacked energy, rhythm, and calmness in decisive moments. The statement read in part: “It was a cruel ending for Senegal, who had done so much right for most of the match. Senegal’s exit will hurt because of how close they came. The Lions of Teranga were close to a famous African victory, but their World Cup ended in heartbreak.”
Coach Pape Thiaw’s Reaction
Senegalese head coach Pape Thiaw admitted the defeat was painful but praised his players. “We’re out – it hurts. We must congratulate the team, who gave it their all, but unfortunately we weren’t able to hold on to our two-goal lead,” he told FIFA. “Congratulations to the Belgian team, who have gone through. We have to accept this; that’s football.”
Player Fallout: Pape Gueye Steps Aside
Midfielder Pape Gueye, who scored the winning goal in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, announced he has stepped aside from the national team following the World Cup exit. He stated he will not return until Pape Thiaw and his coaching team are removed.
