Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has taken decisive action by dissolving the board of Bayelsa United Football Club and dismissing all players, including the technical crew, after the team suffered relegation from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) to the Nigerian National League (NNL).
The governor made this decision following the Yenagoa-based club's drop to the lower division, despite receiving substantial financial backing from the state government throughout the season. Diri ordered that the dissolution take effect immediately as preparations commence for a comprehensive restructuring of the club ahead of its participation in the NNL next season.
A new management team is expected to be appointed in the coming days, with the state government committed to rebuilding the club and securing an immediate return to the top flight. The restructuring aims to address the club's poor performance and ensure a stronger foundation for future campaigns.
Bayelsa United's Poor Performance
Bayelsa United finished the 2026 Nigeria Premier Football League season second from bottom, accumulating a paltry 43 points from 38 matches. The club managed to win 11 games, drew 10, and lost 17 matches, leading to their relegation.
Since its founding in 2008, Bayelsa United has experienced three relegations from the Nigerian topflight and two promotions back to it. This latest setback has prompted the state government to overhaul the club's structure entirely.
Rebuilding Efforts
Governor Diri emphasized the need for a fresh start, directing that a new board and technical team be put in place to oversee the club's revival. The state government is determined to invest in proper management and player development to ensure Bayelsa United returns to the NPFL stronger than before.
The dissolution and sacking mark a significant shift in the club's administration, with expectations high for a more competitive and well-organized team in the upcoming NNL season.
