Egbe Faults Bayelsa Govt Over Sack of Relegated Club Staff

FIFA facilities agent and Chief Executive Officer of Monimichelle Sports Management Company, Ebi Egbe, has faulted the decision of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri to sack all players and coaches of Bayelsa United following the club's relegation from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL). Egbe believes the governor may have been poorly advised on the matter.

Governor's Decision Sparks Controversy

Bayelsa United were relegated from the NPFL at the conclusion of the recently ended season. Frustrated by the team's poor performance despite significant financial investment, Governor Diri announced the dismissal of the entire playing and coaching staff on Wednesday evening. However, Egbe expressed concerns on Thursday that such a blanket action represents direct government interference in the management of a professional football club.

Call for Thorough Review

“While the relegation of Bayelsa United from the NPFL is disappointing, accountability should be based on a thorough review of the club’s administration, funding, player recruitment, technical decisions, and overall management structure rather than a wholesale dismissal of players and coaches,” Egbe stated. He added that reports prior to the club's relegation had already highlighted concerns about the team's performance and management, emphasizing that sustainable football development requires institutional reforms rather than result-driven reactions.

Egbe further noted: “In professional football, responsibility for failure is usually shared among management, technical staff, players, and the supervising authorities. Therefore, if all players and coaches are removed while those responsible for policy, funding, and oversight remain untouched, questions about fairness and the real causes of the club’s decline will naturally arise.”
