The Egyptian Football Association has issued a strong statement condemning the actions of American police officers who confronted members of the national team delegation at the squad's hotel in Arlington, Texas, ahead of their FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match against Australia.
Confrontation Over Child's Photo Request Sparks Tensions
The incident occurred on Thursday when the Pharaohs arrived at their team hotel following FIFA protocols for the knockout fixture. Viral footage showed a heated verbal exchange after a young Egyptian supporter approached forward Trezeguet for a photograph in the hotel lobby. A police officer intervened, and the situation escalated, with the officer seen pushing a member of Egypt's coaching staff and shouting “Back off.” Assistant manager Ibrahim Hassan, twin brother of head coach Hossam Hassan, reacted angrily and had to be restrained by Trezeguet and other delegation members. At one point, the officer appeared to reach toward his back pocket before the situation was brought under control. No physical violence beyond pushing and shoving occurred.
Egypt FA Denies Reports of Major Altercation
In an official statement through its media centre, the Egyptian FA explained that the incident began when a security team member allegedly pushed an Egyptian child trying to take a photo with a player. Ibrahim Hassan intervened, leading to a minor verbal disagreement with a police officer. The federation stressed the matter was quickly resolved and dismissed reports of a more serious incident as “completely unfounded.” Egyptian journalist Belal Elsisi, who witnessed the events, described Hassan's actions as “a natural reaction” and said he “made sure to intervene to retaliate.”
Focus Returns to Australia Clash as Salah Fitness Remains Doubtful
Despite the off-field distraction, Egypt's attention has shifted back to football as they prepare for a crucial knockout tie against Australia, with a potential Round of 16 meeting with Argentina at stake. Captain Mohamed Salah's fitness remains a major concern after he sustained an injury during Egypt's 1-1 draw with Iran and was substituted. Although Salah has resumed training, head coach Hossam Hassan told reporters, “Salah is a passionate player and he is very much looking forward to making his own contribution. I'm not going to run any risk unless I'm 100% sure he is fit and raring to go tomorrow.” Hassan added that a final decision on Salah's inclusion in the starting lineup would be made closer to kick-off, leaving Egyptian supporters anxious about their talisman's availability.
