Ryan Alebiosu Cleared for Super Eagles, Boosts Nigeria's AFCON 2025 Defence
Ex-Arsenal Star Alebiosu Cleared to Play for Nigeria at AFCON

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has received a significant boost ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with the confirmation that defender Ryan Alebiosu is now eligible to play for Nigeria.

Defensive Reinforcements Arrive for Troubled Super Eagles

The Nigerian national team heads to the tournament in Morocco facing considerable challenges, particularly in defence, due to multiple injuries to key players. The clearance for the former Arsenal academy product comes as a timely solution. Alebiosu is expected to provide crucial cover in the absence of the injured Ola Aina and Benjamin Fredrick, both of whom will miss the competition.

Chelle, who has yet to announce his final squad, is meticulously perfecting his list with replacements for injured players and integrating newly cleared talents. This careful approach is underscored by the recent disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a playoff loss to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Winning the AFCON is now a priority for redeeming the team's image among disillusioned Nigerian fans, especially after reaching the final in the 2023 edition only to lose to hosts Côte d'Ivoire.

Passport Issues Resolved for London-Born Defender

According to reports, Ryan Alebiosu has secured the necessary clearance to be part of Chelle's squad after initial issues with obtaining a Nigerian passport. The Nigeria Football Federation escalated the matter, leading to a successful resolution.

Born in London to Nigerian parents, Alebiosu developed at Arsenal's famed Hale End academy before turning professional in 2020. After a move to Belgian side Kortrijk in 2023, he returned to England with Blackburn Rovers in 2025. His performances this season have cemented his reputation as one of the best right-backs in the EFL Championship, earning him a spot on Nigeria's preliminary list for AFCON 2025.

Battle for the Right-Back Spot Heats Up

With Ola Aina unlikely to be fit despite being named in the preliminary squad, the right-back position is set for a direct contest. Alebiosu will compete with Bright Osayi-Samuel for the starting role. Both players currently ply their trade in the EFL Championship, allowing for easy comparison of their form.

This season, Alebiosu has made 17 league appearances, scoring one goal and providing two assists. In contrast, Osayi-Samuel has no direct goal contributions in 13 games. The former Arsenal star has started every match he has played, while Osayi-Samuel has started nine and appeared as a substitute four times.

The inclusion of Alebiosu also helps address the void left by Benjamin Fredrick's lengthy knee injury. Fredrick, who offered versatility at both centre-back and right-back, will be a significant miss, making Alebiosu's availability even more critical for Coach Chelle's tactical plans in Morocco.
