FIFA Sets Dec 15 Deadline for AFCON 2025 Player Release, Super Eagles Camp Opens
FIFA: Clubs must release AFCON players by December 15

The global football governing body, FIFA, has issued a firm directive to clubs worldwide regarding player availability for the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. In a move to settle ongoing debates, clubs are mandated to release called-up players by Monday, December 15, 2025.

FIFA Steps In to Mediate Club vs Country Dispute

Renowned Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano shared the official confirmation from FIFA on his social media platform. The ruling includes a key provision for FIFA to act as a mediator should any disagreements arise between clubs and national teams over player release.

Romano stated that the mandatory release period will commence on December 15, 2025. Notably, this date marks a reduction of seven days from the standard window, a compromise intended to lessen the impact on concurrent European football competitions. FIFA has encouraged both clubs and national federations to collaborate on solutions, with the world body ready to intervene if necessary.

Super Eagles' Road to Morocco Begins with 55-Man Squad

On the Nigerian front, head coach Eric Chelle has taken the first major step towards the tournament by announcing a provisional squad of 55 players. The extensive list is headlined by captain William Troost-Ekong, star striker Victor Osimhen, midfield anchor Wilfred Ndidi, and first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

The squad boasts a blend of experience and emerging talent, featuring other key players such as:

  • Goalkeepers: Maduka Okoye
  • Defenders: Zaidu Sanusi, Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi
  • Midfielders: Frank Onyeka, Alex Iwobi, Raphael Onyedika
  • Forwards: Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Chidera Ejuke

In a nod to domestic talent, several Nigeria Premier Football League players have also received call-ups, including Abdulrasheed Shehu, Ebenezer Harcourt, Ekeson Okorie, Chisom Orji, and Adekunle Adeleke. Coach Chelle is expected to trim this list down to the final 28-man squad in the coming days.

Camp and Group Stage Details Finalized

The Super Eagles' preparation schedule is now set. The team will assemble at a training camp in Egypt on December 10, giving them just under two weeks of focused preparation before the tournament kicks off. During this period, they are scheduled to play a series of friendly matches to fine-tune their tactics.

The 35th edition of AFCON will be held in Morocco from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026. Nigeria has been drawn in Group C, where they will face familiar foes Tunisia, alongside Uganda and Tanzania. The FIFA deadline ensures all teams will have their key players available as they begin their quest for continental glory.
