Super Eagles Legend Garba Lawal Sends Strong Message to Coach Eric Chelle Ahead of AFCON 2027
Nigerian football icon Garba Lawal has delivered a powerful message to Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle as preparations intensify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The former international emphasized the critical need for squad rebuilding and strategic planning following Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Lawal's Advice for Squad Rebuilding and Youth Integration
Garba Lawal, who earned Olympic gold with Nigeria and starred for clubs including Roda JC and Levski Sofia, praised Chelle for introducing new faces during recent friendly matches against Jordan and Iran. However, he stressed that this process must accelerate significantly.
The football legend specifically urged Chelle to begin integrating younger players into the national team setup immediately, noting that several current squad members are approaching their thirties. Lawal stated, "Some of these players are 28, 29, and 30. If you want to build a team, you should start bringing in young players who are 21 and 22 now."
Lawal emphasized that missing the 2026 World Cup should not be viewed as a catastrophic setback but rather as an opportunity. "The absence from the Mundial gives the team more time to regroup and improve its quality," he explained, adding that the coach now has ample time to develop a competitive squad for the 2027 continental tournament.
Chelle's Track Record and Upcoming Challenges
Eric Chelle took over as Super Eagles manager in January 2025 and has since implemented tactical changes that have revitalized the team's playing style. Under his leadership, Nigeria climbed from fifth to second place in their CAF World Cup qualification group, finishing just one point behind South Africa.
Chelle's achievements include:
- Leading Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco
- Winning the 2025 Unity Cup with victories over Ghana and Jamaica
- Improving Nigeria's FIFA ranking through competitive performances
The coach now faces the challenge of preparing Nigeria for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from June 19 to July 18. This tournament represents Nigeria's opportunity to claim their fourth continental title.
Concerns About Preparation and Friendly Matches
Lawal also cautioned the Nigeria Football Federation against organizing what he termed "low-profile friendly matches" that might not adequately test the squad. He emphasized the importance of quality preparation, stating, "Those friendlies are quality matches; you can't underestimate them. There are no easy matches."
The former Kaduna United General Manager reminded everyone that "As a coach, you start building now. Since we aren't going to the World Cup, you can't say you don't have time." This underscores the urgency of proper planning and development in the lead-up to the 2027 tournament.
Upcoming Squad Changes and International Break
Reports indicate that Eric Chelle is planning to invite five new players to the Super Eagles squad for upcoming friendly matches during the international break. This aligns with Lawal's recommendations for youth integration and squad refreshment.
Nigeria's absence from the 2026 World Cup came after a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to DR Congo in the African playoffs held in Morocco last November. This disappointment has created both pressure and opportunity for the national team's rebuilding process.
The coming months will be crucial as Chelle balances maintaining competitive performance with introducing younger talent, all while preparing for the significant challenge of AFCON 2027 in East Africa.
