Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has named France as the team most likely to win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The former Barcelona and Juventus star, who won the World Cup with France in 1998, believes Les Bleus have the depth and quality to triumph again.
France Drawn in Group I
France have been placed in Group I alongside Senegal, Iraq, and Norway. Their opening match is scheduled for Tuesday, June 16, against Senegal, a team Henry also rates highly. France won the 2018 World Cup in Russia but lost the 2022 final in Qatar to Argentina on penalties after a 3-3 draw.
Henry Praises Squad Depth
Speaking to UK Metro, Henry highlighted the strength of Didier Deschamps' squad, noting that the quality of substitutes is nearly equal to that of the starters. “I see France as the top contender, partly because I’m French, but also because we’ve reached the last two finals,” Henry said. “It sounds simple, but squad depth is crucial. If your substitutes are on par with the starting eleven, it’s a huge advantage, especially in such a long tournament after an intense season.”
Other Contenders
Henry also named Argentina, Portugal, Spain, and England as strong contenders. He expressed hope that Senegal could surpass their 2002 World Cup performance, when they reached the quarterfinals. “We have a strong team. Spain, Argentina, Portugal, and England are also promising candidates. Surprises like Norway or Senegal are possible,” he added.
Message to Germany
Henry also commented on Germany's chances, saying he expects them to rediscover their best form. However, he made it clear that his loyalty remains with France. “As for Germany, I’m waiting for them to rediscover their best form. Germany has qualified, and that’s the most important thing. Sometimes you can even play better with less pressure. In any case, I wish Julian Nagelsmann and his team all the best – unless they play against France,” Henry said.
Ghana's Chances
In related news, Ghana have been given a 0.19% chance of winning the 2026 World Cup by Opta's supercomputer, with a 0.71% probability of reaching the final. The Black Stars have an 18.16% chance of advancing to the Round of 16 and a 7.06% likelihood of topping Group L, which includes England.
Thierry Henry's confidence in France reflects the team's consistent performances in recent tournaments, and with a deep squad, they remain a formidable force heading into the 2026 World Cup.
