FIFA President Assures Iran's World Cup Participation Despite Ongoing Conflict

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has firmly reiterated that Iran will definitely participate in the upcoming FIFA World Cup, even as the country remains embroiled in a war with the United States. This assurance comes amid significant doubts about Iran's involvement following recent military actions.

Infantino's Statement at CNBC Forum

Speaking at the CNBC Invest in America Forum, Infantino emphasized the critical importance of Iran's presence at the global football event. He stated, "The Iranian team is coming for sure, yes." He expressed hope for a peaceful resolution by the time of the tournament, noting that such a development would be beneficial, but insisted that Iran's participation is non-negotiable.

Infantino highlighted that the Iranian team represents its people, has legitimately qualified for the competition, and the players are eager to compete. He stressed, "Sports should be outside of politics now," advocating for the separation of athletic endeavors from geopolitical tensions.

Meeting with the Iranian Team

Two weeks prior to his statement, Infantino met with the Iranian national team in Antalya, Turkey. He shared on Wednesday that he was impressed by their quality and determination. "I went to see them. They are actually quite a good team as well," he said, adding, "And they really want to play and they should play."

Acknowledging Real-World Challenges

While advocating for sports to transcend politics, Infantino acknowledged the complexities of achieving this ideal in the current global climate. He remarked, "OK we don't live on the moon, we live on planet Earth," recognizing that complete separation is not always feasible. However, he affirmed FIFA's role in fostering unity, stating, "But you know if there is nobody else that believes in building bridges and in keeping them, you know, intact and together, well we are doing that job."

World Cup Hosting and Schedule Details

The upcoming FIFA World Cup is set to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Iran's participation includes scheduled group-stage matches, with two games to be held in Inglewood, California, and one in Seattle, Washington. This arrangement underscores the tournament's international scope despite the diplomatic strains.

Infantino's comments reinforce FIFA's commitment to inclusivity in sports, even in times of conflict, aiming to use football as a platform for dialogue and peace-building on the global stage.
