Ivory Coast on the Verge of History
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued a statement backing Ivory Coast as they prepare to face Germany in a crucial Group E match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A victory for the Elephants would secure their first-ever place in the knockout stage of the tournament, marking a historic milestone for the West African nation.
Ivory Coast opened their campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Ecuador, courtesy of a 90th-minute strike from Amad Diallo. The result made them the first African team to win a match at this year's World Cup. Meanwhile, Germany thrashed debutants Curaçao 7-1 in their opening fixture, setting up a high-stakes encounter between the two sides.
CAF's Message of Support
In a statement published on its official website, CAF emphasized the significance of reaching the knockout stage for Ivory Coast. The organization noted that despite boasting legendary players such as Didier Drogba in previous tournaments, the Elephants have never advanced beyond the group stage in their three prior World Cup appearances (2006, 2010, 2014).
"Twenty years after their debut on the world stage, with a team that included current manager Emerse Fae, the Elephants can finally dream of achieving what has eluded them," the statement read. A win against Germany would guarantee progression, while any other result would leave them needing a positive outcome against Curaçao in their final group match.
Emerse Fae's Quest for Glory
Emerse Fae, who took over as head coach during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after Jean-Louis Gasset's dismissal, led Ivory Coast to the continental title on home soil. Now, the 42-year-old aims to guide his team to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time.
Reflecting on his own experience as a player in the 2006 World Cup squad, Fae told FIFA: "It was a pleasure and an honour to belong to that team. We had incredible quality with players like Kolo Touré, Didier Zokora and Kader Keita. What we lacked was experience. We were a young generation, and things came down to fine margins and a lack of success in key moments. We want to surpass Didier's generation."
FIF Supports Elye Wahi
In related news, the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) sent a message of support to striker Elye Wahi after he was denied entry into Canada for the match against Germany. Wahi had been arrested weeks earlier on suspicion of spot-fixing during a Ligue 1 match, but the Canadian visa restriction was lifted following an appeal by the federation, allowing him to join the squad.
