Iwobi Grateful for Support Ahead of Milestone
Alexander Iwobi has expressed deep gratitude to Nigeria and Nigerians worldwide for their unwavering support throughout his international career with the Super Eagles. The midfielder is set to earn his 100th cap for Nigeria in the upcoming friendly against Portugal in Leiria.
"I am proud to be where I am today; proud to wear the green-and-white. I am grateful to everyone, including the coach who first called me up. I have no regrets choosing Nigeria," Iwobi said ahead of the match.
Iwobi made his debut for Nigeria on October 8, 2015, in a friendly against DR Congo in Visé, Belgium. Now, 128 months later, he will achieve his 100th appearance in another friendly in Europe.
Choosing Nigeria Over England
The playmaker, who represented England at youth levels, always felt a connection to Nigeria. "I first went to the Nigeria U-23 camp and felt at home. My father always told me to enjoy my football and make the best decision for myself. He was part of the decision but didn't force it," Iwobi recalled.
Reflecting on his journey, he said: "After 10 years and eight months, I won't call myself a legend; I'm just a Super Eagles player. It feels great to be approaching 100 caps. On a lighter note, I wish I could add another 100. I've enjoyed my time with the team."
Memorable Moments
Iwobi singled out his goal against Zambia in October 2017 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, which secured Nigeria's qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, as his most memorable moment. "My dad and mum were both at the stadium and saw it all. We celebrated together afterwards. It was an exciting moment," he said.
While he regrets not winning the Africa Cup of Nations or playing in the upcoming World Cup, he holds no bitterness. "I would have loved to win the AFCON and be at the World Cup, but no regrets."
Family Pride
Iwobi's father, Chuka Iwobi, a former footballer, expressed the family's pride. "We are grateful to the nation for the opportunity. When Alex debuted in 2015, we never imagined this incredible journey to 100 caps. He loves playing for Nigeria and always gives his best. No one can question his commitment. We pray he continues to excel and that the Super Eagles repay the fans' support."
Iwobi has featured in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, winning silver in 2023 and bronze in 2019 and 2025, and played at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
