Jose Mourinho has reached a verbal agreement to return to Real Madrid as head coach for the upcoming season, according to renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The 63-year-old Portuguese tactician is set to take over at the Santiago Bernabeu, ending his current role with Benfica.
Mourinho's Return to Real Madrid
Mourinho, who previously managed Real Madrid from 2010 to 2013, will replace interim manager Alvaro Arbeloa. Arbeloa had stepped in for Xabi Alonso in January but failed to impress club president Florentino Perez and the board. Under Arbeloa, the team recorded 15 wins, two draws, and eight defeats, culminating in a humiliating 2-0 loss to Barcelona over the weekend, which handed the LaLiga title to their arch-rivals.
According to Romano's post on X on Monday, Mourinho is expected to travel to Madrid after Real Madrid's final La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao to finalize the procedural steps before an official announcement is made. The report states: "All terms have been verbally agreed between José Mourinho and Real Madrid, waiting to sign all documents. Plan for initial two year deal, JM to travel to Madrid after Real-Bilbao game. The Special One is back."
Mourinho's Previous Tenure at Madrid
During his first stint at Real Madrid, Mourinho enjoyed considerable success, winning the LaLiga title, the Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa de España. His return is expected to bring stability and a winning mentality to a club that has struggled in recent months.
The announcement has generated significant excitement among fans, who remember Mourinho's charismatic and often controversial style. The two-year contract will see him aim to restore Real Madrid to the pinnacle of Spanish and European football.
