Three iconic figures of Nigerian football, Nwankwo Kanu, Austin Jay Jay Okocha, and Daniel Amokachi, are poised to reunite on the pitch for a special African legends match. This highly anticipated event will bring together some of the continent's most celebrated former players for a showcase of talent and camaraderie.

The trio dominated the men's senior national team during their illustrious careers, achieving remarkable successes that endeared them to fans across Africa and Europe. Together, they contributed to Nigeria's victory in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the historic Olympic gold medal win.
Nwankwo Kanu, in particular, played a pivotal role in Nigeria's gold medal triumph at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. His memorable comeback goals against Brazil in the semifinal inspired the team to a famous 4-3 victory, cementing his status as a national hero.

As chairman of Enyimba Football Club, Kanu highlighted that this program allows ex-internationals to give back to society. He stated, "The football event is going to take place in Nigeria, and legends from across Africa will be there. They are going to do what we normally know how to do. Everybody will enjoy it."
Kanu further explained, "The reason why we are involved in this project is that we want to promote the culture of Africa. At the same time, empower the grassroots. So, myself Jay Jay Okocha, Daniel Amokachi and others will participate in the match."

The African Legends match is scheduled to take place at the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Package A, in Abuja on March 28. This gathering is expected to draw attention from football enthusiasts across the continent.
Former Cameroon international Eyong Enoh commented on the match's unifying potential, noting that it will further strengthen ties between Nigeria and Cameroon. He remarked, "I don’t see myself just as a Cameroonian. I see myself as an African," emphasizing that such initiatives help bridge divisions created by colonial histories.
Enoh added, "You need initiatives to drive it. Just like we know, we have a lot of projects, we have a lot of promises, but the actions to drive that is a big deal." The event promises to benefit society through the collective presence of football legends.

Recently, Kanu expressed dissatisfaction with the current coaching situation in the Super Eagles, urging the Nigeria Football Federation to appoint Augustine Eguavoen permanently. Eguavoen was brought in on an interim basis after Finidi George was dismissed in June following a disappointing start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
