The Lagos State Sports Commission signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Abbey Rangers FC, one of the longest-serving community football clubs in the United Kingdom, on Monday. The signing ceremony took place at the Commission's office inside Teslim Balogun Stadium.
Partnership Goals
Chairman of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, stated that beyond building a solid football structure for Nigerian youths, the partnership will lead to massive talent identification, coaches and technical capacity building, and laying the foundation for those interested in sports science. He emphasized that this is the first time any Nigerian state is entering into such a community football partnership, calling it historic.
Fatodu added that the initiative will help reduce the 'japa' syndrome among youths, as Nigeria cannot afford to lose its talents abroad. He stressed the need to plan for the future, which this partnership aims to achieve. Lagos brings integrity and sincerity to the partnership, as Abbey Rangers FC, celebrating its 50th anniversary in May, deserves a better deal in Nigeria.
Abbey Rangers FC's Vision
Nick Riley, Chairman of Abbey Rangers FC, explained that their mission in Africa is to search for hidden talents, and they are proud to partner with the Lagos Sports Commission. He noted that many Nigerians want quick results, but Abbey Rangers FC builds a legacy that lasts for generations. He described the journey with the Lagos Sports Commission as one that never ends, adding that he was impressed with the youth tournament he watched on Monday. The club, though community-based in the UK, extends beyond a single community.
Government Support
Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, described the partnership as great. He highlighted that under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's second tenure, Lagos sports has achieved many firsts, and this MoU is another milestone in Nigerian sports. He emphasized that Lagos focuses on creating opportunities for young people, engaging them in civic participation and skill-building, while promoting partnerships for development.
British Deputy High Commission's Remarks
British Deputy High Commissioner to Lagos, Simon Field, who witnessed the signing, noted the strong connection between Nigeria and the United Kingdom. He expressed delight in being part of the historic moment, stating that the UK has the best Premier League globally, with many Nigerians contributing, such as Alex Iwobi and Kelvin Bassey. He expressed confidence that this partnership will produce more great talents in the near future.
